David McDougall Globe and Mail Update Last updated on Monday, Jul. 27, 2009 12:09PM EDT A Canadian citizen imprisoned in Ethiopia for two-and-a-half years, has been convicted by a civilian court in Addis Ababa on three charges relating to his alleged involvement in an Ethiopian separatist movement. Bashir Makhtal, a former Toronto resident now in his 40s, is the grandson of one of the founding members of the Ogaden National Liberation Front, though he claims he has no connection with the movement.

A former Toronto resident is being tortured in Ethiopia, his relatives say.
Bashir Makhtal has been detained in Ethiopia since late January.
He is among 41 prisoners from 17 countries that Ethiopia has admitted holding; 29 were ordered released by a military court.
Makhtal was among the dozen who were to remain in custody.

Human rights group issues new appeal over detained former Toronto resident April 18, 2007
Amnesty International has sent out another urgent appeal over the incommunicado detention and possible torture and ill treatment of Bashir Makhtal, a Canadian citizen and former Toronto resident who was deported from Kenya to Somalia and Ethiopia without being charged in January.

It appears a former Toronto resident will remain in detention in Ethiopia – even though the government there has begun to release "suspected international terrorists" it has in custody.
Bashir Makhtal, a Canadian citizen, is believed to be one of 41 foreign nationals from 17 countries detained in Ethiopia.
Yesterday, for the first time, the Ethiopian government acknowledged it had these prisoners or what it describes as "suspected international terrorists" in custody and that it had allowed "foreign investigators" to question them.
